Journey by Kevin Cox

For more than 38 years, Gary Jones rolled on 18 or 22 wheels to deliver steel throughout Atlantic Canada. On May 15th he will be rolling across Canada on two wheels determined to deliver funding for research into thyroid cancer.

Gary was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a decade ago and was able to successfully complete treatments. Thyroid Cancer is not as well known as Breast and Prostate Cancer, but got a lot of attention in the Canadian Cancer Society’s 2008 cancer statistics report as the most rapidly increasing cancer in Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society estimated that there would be 4,300 new cases in 2008 reported in Canada.

Gary’s journey seeking better treatments, therapy, and possibly a cure for thyroid cancer began in the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Soon, he will be heading for Victoria, BC to start a 6,000 plus kilometre bicycle journey to his home in Halifax, NS. “This is all about hope, faith and attitude” Gary said.

He is confident that his years of barring steel, cycling and running will give him the physical toughness he needs for the challenge. Mentally he has been preparing for his long days on the road for more than a year as he sought sponsors to support the campaign for thyroid awareness and research.

To date his solo effort has raised $4,739.64 and his target is $20,000. But Gary does not believe in limiting anything in life.

To The Keeper by Wayne Smith

As I was lying under my warm covers, with my pillow in my arms, a bright light shined through my window. As I let go of my pillow and pulled back the covers, I looked out of the window and looked up. In the sky, and my angel said to me to move the tree of life so that all could see her three trees.
I said her wish was my command.

Welder Crafts Tree of Life as a Tribute to People Who Have Died of Cancer

After 160 hours of labour, Wayne Smith has reached his goal of touching people's hearts.

The Salmon River resident wanted a unique way to remember people who have died of cancer. His journey began when a friend asked him to participate in this past summer's Relay for Life in honour of her friend who had passed away. After the event, he began thinking of a more permanent way to remember those lost to the disease, which also claimed his father's life.

The end result was the Tree of Life, a steel monument weighting five tons and measuring 30 feet by 18 feet. The sculpture is three trees, each with 12 rings representing each month of the year and the 12 days of Christmas. Each tree has a butterfly on top symbolic of the cancer society and a ring on top, which is reflective of an angel's halo.

"I've had grown men get choked up when they see," said Smith. "It's to remember loved ones and treasure the living. You don't realize what you have until it's gone: This is (thanks) to a special lady that opened my eyes to my inner self...it's a personal satisfaction to make people appreciate what they ahve now with the living."

Although he has not found a permanent home for the sculpture - it is resting in his welding shop - he envisions it becoming a vital part of the community.

"I'd like to see it become a meeting place for people who have lost loved ones. Maybe they could put a tag with their loved one's name on it in memory of them," he suggested.

The sculpture also boasts of a poem, created by Smith. It's called the Tree of Life 2008 and states: Like the tree of life the memories still keep on growing. As we all grow older we have to share the time with others because we all need each other to grow together and be stronger.

The Relay For Life by: Wayne Smith

As we look down and see all of you talking and thinking about the ones that have gone, we see that the earth angel has made his mark.

In his way he has made the trees of life so that all of you can see and tell the stories of the loved ones that have been taken by cancer. The wishes from the angels are that we all help each other often and that we need each other to better the lives of all of you.

As the keeper of the tree of life has left the sign. The sign is he leaves the candle on all night in the trees of life to tell that we can be with you, with the tears from heaven. Now with the trees of life we know that we or you can come and talk with the angels at anytime. There are lots of earth angels with you, but some are there for all. We miss you.

*The tree of life is in down town Truro off Young and Prince Street.

My Angels by: Wayne Smith

As the earth angel works his way in life helping where he is needed. He also needs help. As the keeper of the tree of life he left the sign, the sign was when he needs the help from his angels he leaves the candle on all night in the tree of life so we can tell we are needed.

His need was to wash away the misfortune of others with the tears from heaven. As the tears fell the keeper asked not all at one time so that the misfortune could flow away slowly.

As the keeper stopped the flow of tears so he could then repair the flow of life. He opened the flood gate like the gates to heaven, so the last of her misfortune could be washed away.

We are all looking down on you, all the earth angels and we are so happy to have helped in any way.

We all miss you.

My Mother by: Margaret Hall

My mom had survived bowel cancer for 22 years having surgery when she had been 56 years of age. She was a great lover of animals, cats, dogs, birds, etc. When she was 78 years of age, she started again to not feel well and soon discovered her cancer had spread to most of her organs. I always stopped at her home at 5 pm to see how supper was going and she would call each night at 10 pm. Then one night when she called she did not want to talk with me. She wanted my husband, Monty, to go down to her house and see her if he could right away. So off he went. I waited and waited and he soon returned. I asked what did mom want. He paused then said "your mom said she is really not feeling well and feels she will only live maybe a few months as the pain was getting worse and worse." "Monty take care of my animals, Harry the dog and the two cats, Ginger and Flurry. When I feel that I can no longer care for them and be fair to them." Monty said yes as he loves animals and we laughted at mom as she knew I don't really have a great love for animals. When Harry got to heavy on the blankets on her bed, he moved up to our house and when she could not open the doors for the cats to go out doors, Ginger and Flurry moved up.

Mother passed away three months later and we often say "It has been five years since mom's passing but she is looking down from heaven with a great big smile at her animals happily playing and chasing each other on our lawn.
